What would scripture actually look like if you were standing on the ground, in the dust, as history unfolded?

A groundbreaking new AI-assisted video series is tackling that exact question through an unorthodox, high-concept lens: a first-century Judean shepherd named Barry who somehow stumbled upon an iPhone and began daily-vlogging his life on TikTok.

Titled after its central character, Barry offers an authentic, street-level view of ancient Judea and Galilee. Rather than presenting a polished, reverent, or distant historical reenactment, the series drops viewers directly into the boots of an ordinary working man who is simply trying to manage his sheep, bicker with his friends, and navigate daily life in AD 28—completely unaware that he is living through the foundational events of the New Testament.

“We wanted to strip away the stained-glass distance and show what these moments might have actually felt like to an everyday person on the street,” says creator Dathan Pyle. “Barry isn’t a theologian or a religious scholar—he’s just a guy doing his job who keeps running into extraordinary events. One week he’s chasing a stray sheep and stumbles into a wild man eating locusts in the desert; the next week, he’s standing in the Jordan River watching the sky open up.”

Using cutting-edge AI video technology paired with strict historical and scriptural research, the series captures the raw, handheld texture of modern social media vlogging while maintaining a grounded, period-accurate setting. From the bustling, crowded shores of Capernaum to quiet moments in the Galilean countryside, viewers experience scripture not as a textbook lesson, but as a live, unpredictable, real-time journey.

The project follows a detailed, sequential narrative arc starting with the ministry of John the Baptist and tracking the life, miracles, and surrounding cultural pressure of Jesus of Nazareth. Along the way, Barry is joined by a cast of recurring local characters—including his deadpan friend Zeke—and encounters firsthand witness accounts from ordinary citizens, fishermen, and passersby who crossed paths with history.

Episodes of Barry are currently rolling out daily on TikTok under the handle @barrytheshepherd and cross-posted across social platforms. To watch the latest episodes, explore behind-the-scenes production insights, or learn more about the project, visit dathanpyle.com.
